Types of Corrections

We distinguish between different types of errors and handle each appropriately:

Factual Errors

Factual errors are statements that are objectively incorrect. Examples include:

Factual errors are corrected immediately, and a correction notice is added to the article.

Clarifications

Clarifications are used when the original reporting was technically accurate but could be misleading or confusing. A clarification is added to provide additional context or explanation.

Updates

Updates are used to add new information to a story that has developed since original publication. Updates are timestamped to distinguish them from the original content.

How We Handle Corrections

  1. Verification: We verify the error and the correct information before publishing a correction.
  2. Correction Notice: We add a correction notice to the article that clearly states what was wrong and what is correct.
  3. Original Text: In most cases, we correct the original text and note the change in the correction notice.
  4. Archives: Corrections are applied to archived versions of articles when possible.
  5. Social Media: When significant errors are corrected, we may post about the correction on social media.
